Front End Development
Effectively use HTML, CSS and JS to develop a best practice front-facing website environment
By leveraging our research and digital expertise, we develop optimised websites with a focus on consumer journeys and landing pages, combined with SEO-friendly content management systems that create the perfect environment for digital activities.
Our platform of choice is WordPress, the popular, ubiquitous, optimisable and user-friendly CMS platform. WordPress has come a long way from its early days where its primary use was as a blogging platform; it is now the most widely used and accepted CMS in modern use. The system has significant advantages in terms of its open-source coding (no license or product lock-in), high levels of product support (regular updates and security patches), a vast array of plugins (resulting in significant savings in cost and resource by using trusted third-party applications), built-in SEO, user account and analytics capability and a very user-friendly content management system making updating and learning the system very easy for users.
Our process for developing websites is logical and iterative. We initiate the process with a series of workshops where we discuss the rationale and objectives of the website in detail and get a discrete understanding of your requirements, supplemental to what is contained in the request for proposal. This initial discovery workshop drives detailed analysis of the information architecture of the current website, the current user journeys and the current content available and then subsequent reconfiguration of the information architecture collaboratively to finalise the overall planning stage.
Once the journeys and information architecture stages are completed, we move to define the website specification (the technical and functional requirements) and initiate the design phase. There are two options for design – we can either work with a specified pre-designed theme (with significant cost savings) or engage a partner design company (or your own designers) to create a custom website design.
Following the design stage, we progress to the front-end development stage where we transform the high-resolution graphic designs of each page into HTML and style the look and feel of the website using CSS. Front end development manages everything that users visually see in their browser and includes the responsive versions of the site including different browser versions and devices. Once the look and feel of the site is aligned with the signed off graphic designs we progress to back-end development.
The back-end development stage is where we incorporate the database, content management system and any applications or integrations that are required, as well as any integrations from landing pages to third party applications such as the payment systems or internal customer relationship management systems. At this stage we focus on content migration, optimising the code, the speed of the website, the functionality including forms, email communications, search functionality, content responsiveness and any other interactive elements on the website. Once the final development stage is completed we move to user acceptance testing.
Once the website prototype is completed we undertake user testing to identify any bugs or snags that need to be fixed or refined at this stage. Typically, finishes and polishes are addressed at this stage including font consistency, alignment, responsiveness across different browsers and screens, updates to content. Generally, it is the client that develops and writes the content for the website and we take this draft content and style it appropriately into the website. We will ask you to review the website content once it has been uploaded and work with you to polish the website to ensure it meets your requirements.
The final stage of the development process is the digital optimisation stage where we optimise the website for SEO and analytics. We perform on-page SEO, creating title, description and alt tags on each page and prepare for the SEO migration by creating a redirection map for 301 redirects from the old website to their corresponding pages on the new website. We install Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics and Google Search Console and configure the goals in Google Analytics. Following the launch of the website we initiate the post launch action list which puts the Analytics and Search Console platforms live (the website needs to be live to action these) and initiate the 301 redirects (the SEO migration).
